An ideal coating should ensure stable repellency, should be transparent in order not to affect color or transparency of the underlying substrate and should be able to be deposited in a simple process on materials regardless of their size, shape, or composition. The key diffi culty in creating such omniphobic coatings is to overcome the strong tendency of low-surface-tension organic liquids to wet surfaces [ 1,2 ] and the adsorption of organic contaminants (especially proteins, cells or bacteria) that can compromise the repellent properties. Corrosion Behavior of Ti/TiN Multilayer Nanostructured Coatings Applied on AISI 316L by Arc-PVD Method in the Simulated Body Fluid

In this investigation, Ti/TiN nanolayer and TiN single layer coatings were coated on substrate of AISI 316L stainless steel by applying physical vapor deposition (PVD) using the type of cathodic arc evaporation (CAE). The evaluation of microstructure were carried out using x-ray diffraction (XRD), nanoindentation, atomic force microscopy (AFM) as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Pola...

Hierarchical or not? Effect of the length scale and hierarchy of the surface roughness on omniphobicity of lubricant-infused substrates.

Lubricant-infused textured solid substrates are gaining remarkable interest as a new class of omni-repellent nonfouling materials and surface coatings. We investigated the effect of the length scale and hierarchy of the surface topography of the underlying substrates on their ability to retain the lubricant under high shear conditions, which is important for maintaining nonwetting properties un...

Synthesis of antireflective silica coatings through the synergy of polypeptide layer-by-layer assemblies and biomineralization.

We report a versatile approach to synthesize silica coatings with antireflective (AR) characteristics through the combination of a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique and biomineralization. LbL assembled decanoyl-modified poly(l-lysine)/poly(l-glutamic acid) (PLL-g-Dec/PLGA) multilayer films were used as templates for silica mineralization, followed by calcination. The specific deposition o...

A facile layer-by-layer deposition process for the fabrication of highly transparent superhydrophobic coatings.

A facile layer-by-layer deposition process is developed to fabricate highly-transparent superhydrophobic coatings, which comprise the underlying antireflective nanoporous silica layer and the top transparent superhydrophobic SiO(2) nanoparticle layer.

Wear stability of polymer nanocomposite coatings with trilayer architecture

A polymer trilayer (sandwiched) film with a thickness of 20–30 nm has been designed to serve as a wear resistant nanoscale coating for silicon surfaces. These surface structures are formed by a multiple grafting technique applied to self-assembled monolayers (SAM) and functionalized tri-block copolymer, followed by the photopolymerization of a topmost polymer layer. The unique design of this la...
